Colonial flag design is a contentious subject in South Africa, with many people arguing that it is too complicated and expensive.

A number of countries are also using a colonial symbol on their flag designs, with India, Bangladesh and the Philippines all choosing to incorporate the colonial design on their flags.

The flag of a country is often made by merging its national colours, often incorporating a colonial design into the national colours.
